DENZA BAO 5 Debuts in Europe With 544 PS Plug-In Hybrid Power and 537-Mile Range

DENZA has officially expanded its European lineup with the launch of the new BAO 5, the premium brand’s first SUV for the region. Developed by BYD Group, the rugged plug-in hybrid combines impressive off-road capability with luxury, advanced technology, and long-distance efficiency, targeting buyers who want adventure without sacrificing everyday comfort.

Built on DENZA’s dedicated DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) platform, the BAO 5 delivers powerful performance, a premium interior, and an extensive list of standard equipment, marking another significant step in BYD’s growing presence in the European market.

Powerful DMO Plug-In Hybrid System

At the heart of the DENZA BAO 5 is a sophisticated plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with front and rear electric motors. Together, the system produces 544 PS (400 kW) and 760 Nm (561 lb-ft) of torque, allowing the five-seat SUV to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in just 4.8 seconds.

Unlike conventional plug-in hybrids, the gasoline engine primarily acts as a generator, supplying energy to the 31.8-kWh Blade Battery and electric motors. This approach allows the BAO 5 to deliver an EV-like driving experience while maintaining the flexibility of a hybrid for longer journeys.

The SUV offers:

– 56 miles (90 km) of WLTP electric-only driving range
– 537 miles (864 km) of combined WLTP range
– 11 kW AC charging
– 100 kW DC fast charging, capable of charging the battery from 30% to 80% in approximately 16 minutes

These figures make the BAO 5 suitable for both daily electric commuting and extended road trips.

Engineered for Serious Off-Road Capability

The BAO 5 is far more than a premium family SUV. It rides on a ladder-frame chassis designed specifically for demanding terrain and incorporates DENZA’s DMO architecture, the company’s dedicated off-road hybrid platform.

The SUV features intelligent electronic locking differentials at both axles, an electronically controlled center torque management system, and double-wishbone suspension at the front and rear.

Higher-spec Ultimate models add DiSus-P intelligent hydraulic suspension, which continuously analyzes data from more than 20 sensors to adjust ride height, damping, and chassis stiffness in real time.

The system provides:

– Up to 90 mm of additional ground clearance
– Maximum ground clearance of 310 mm
– Independent hydraulic wheel control
– Automatic self-leveling for camping
– Improved approach and departure angles for challenging terrain

A turning circle of just 5.9 meters also improves maneuverability in both urban environments and off-road situations.

Bold SUV Design

Measuring 4,921 mm long, 1,970 mm wide, and 1,920 mm tall, the BAO 5 combines a commanding presence with practical proportions.

Its upright styling is complemented by distinctive ring-shaped LED headlights, a robust front bumper, aluminum roof rails, muscular wheel arches, integrated side steps, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel that reinforces its rugged appearance.

Ultimate models feature electrically deploying side steps, while the powered soft-closing tailgate adds convenience during everyday use.

Premium Cabin Loaded With Technology

Inside, the BAO 5 focuses on both luxury and functionality.

Drivers benefit from a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display, and a 15.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen with Google Built-in, including Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play support.

A dedicated passenger display allows front-seat occupants to independently access entertainment functions, while DENZA’s four-zone voice assistant supports control of more than 300 vehicle functions.

Other premium highlights include:

– Devialet premium audio system with up to 18 speakers
– Heated, ventilated and massage front seats
– Heated and ventilated rear seats on Ultimate models
– Nappa leather upholstery on Ultimate trim
– Panoramic glass roof
– Ambient interior lighting
– Multiple USB charging ports
– Wireless smartphone charging
– Refrigerated and heated center console storage compartment
– Digital key sharing via the DENZA mobile app

The spacious cabin also benefits from a 2,800 mm wheelbase, providing generous legroom for all passengers.

Cargo space measures 475 liters with the rear seats in place and expands to 1,736 liters when folded.

Comprehensive Safety Equipment

Safety has been given equal attention throughout the BAO 5’s development.

The body structure uses 96% high-strength steel, while the SUV comes standard with 11 airbags and an extensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems.

Standard safety technologies include:

– Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control
– Lane Keeping Assist
– Lane Departure Warning
– Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Braking
– Hill Descent Control
– Front and rear parking sensors
– 360-degree camera system
– Digital rear-view mirror

The reinforced roof structure is designed to withstand compression loads of up to 12 tonnes, further enhancing occupant protection.

Two Well-Equipped Trim Levels

European buyers can choose between Elegance and Ultimate trims.

Even the entry-level Elegance model includes 18-inch alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated massage seats, heated steering wheel, premium audio system, digital displays, and wireless smartphone charging.

The Ultimate version adds:

– 20-inch alloy wheels
– DiSus-P intelligent suspension
– Digital rear-view mirror
– Upgraded 18-speaker Devialet audio system
– Ventilated rear seats
– Dual wireless charging pads
– Enclosed spare wheel cover

European Availability

The DENZA BAO 5 will be available in a selection of metallic exterior colors, including Shadow Black, Snowy White, Pinnacle Grey, Wagner Glacier Blue, Dolomite Green, Tarim Polar Gold, and a matte Mineral Purple finish.

Orders across Europe are scheduled to open during the summer, with the first customer deliveries expected in the fourth quarter of the year.
