smart has brought its Concept #2 to Rome for its European premiere, offering a closer look at the design, interior philosophy and electric architecture planned for the upcoming smart #2.
Following its global debut in Beijing in April, the Concept #2 arrives as a modern reinterpretation of the brand’s iconic fortwo. The ultra-compact electric model is expected to combine the maneuverability that made the original smart two-seater popular with a new dedicated EV platform, improved cabin space and a targeted driving range of nearly 300 kilometers under the WLTP cycle.
Function-First Design for the Next smart #2
The smart Concept #2 previews the design direction of the production-bound smart #2, with proportions and details tailored to city driving. Its two-tone exterior, frameless doors and clean body surfaces are built around smart’s “Function becomes Fashion” design principle.
Rather than relying on decorative styling, smart says the concept’s visual identity is shaped by practical decisions. The compact footprint, short overhangs and upright proportions are designed to maximize usability in dense urban environments while retaining the recognizable character of the original fortwo.
Interior Focuses on Space and Simplicity
Inside, the upcoming smart #2 is expected to introduce a more open and flexible approach to ultra-compact vehicle interiors. The concept features a continuous bench seat, an S-shaped cockpit layout and a minimalist cabin designed to make the most of limited exterior dimensions.
The bench seat removes the traditional visual divide between driver and passenger, creating a more spacious and social interior environment. Meanwhile, the S-shaped cockpit is intended to improve ergonomics, visibility and intuitive control placement.
Developed by the global Mercedes-Benz design team, the interior aims to deliver a more premium experience without compromising the compact vehicle’s urban practicality. smart says every element has been designed to support efficiency, accessibility and comfort.
ECA Platform Supports Nearly 300 km of Range
At the center of the upcoming smart #2 is the new Electric Compact Architecture, or ECA platform. Developed specifically for ultra-compact electric vehicles, the scalable architecture is designed to support urban agility, efficient packaging, safety and everyday EV usability.
smart targets a 35.7 kWh battery pack for the smart #2, with an estimated WLTP driving range of nearly 300 km. The model is also expected to support DC fast charging from 10% to 80% state of charge in around 20 minutes.
The ECA platform will enable a 6.95-meter turning diameter, matching the agility of the previous-generation smart two-seater. This should make the smart #2 particularly well suited to narrow streets, tight parking spaces and congested city centers.
Short overhangs and compact drivetrain packaging are also expected to free up more cabin space, allowing smart to create an interior that feels larger than the vehicle’s exterior dimensions suggest.
Updated Tridion Safety Cell for the Electric Era
Safety remains a central focus for the smart #2. The model will feature a next-generation version of smart’s tridion safety cell, a defining feature of earlier fortwo models.
The updated structure is intended to combine compact dimensions with a robust body architecture designed to meet modern safety requirements. smart says the goal is to ensure that small electric cars can deliver not only efficient urban transportation, but also stability, protection and driver confidence.
With its Rome debut, the smart Concept #2 provides the clearest preview yet of the future smart #2. The production model is shaping up as a fully electric successor to the fortwo, combining compact city-car proportions with longer range, faster charging, improved interior packaging and a new generation of safety technology.
