BYD DOLPHIN G DM-i Brings New DM 5.0 Super Hybrid Technology to Europe

BYD has unveiled the all-new DOLPHIN G DM-i in Europe, introducing the latest generation of its DM 5.0 Super Hybrid technology to the region. Designed specifically for European customers, the new B-segment hatchback combines impressive efficiency, long-distance capability, and advanced in-car technology in a highly competitive package.

The launch marks another milestone for BYD’s plug-in hybrid strategy. The company has already sold more than 8.5 million vehicles equipped with its DM hybrid technology worldwide, helping establish BYD as one of Europe’s fastest-growing PHEV brands.

DM 5.0 Focuses on Efficiency and Range

The new DM 5.0 system delivers significant improvements in three key areas: powertrain performance, thermal management, and electronic integration.

At the heart of the system is a newly developed 1.5-liter gasoline engine engineered specifically for hybrid applications. The engine features a 16:1 compression ratio, intelligent fuel injection, split cooling, and variable lubrication technologies, producing 95 PS (70 kW).

BYD has also enhanced its Electric Hybrid System (EHS) through cooling and transmission optimizations, along with the use of ultra-thin silicon steel components designed to improve overall efficiency.

Thermal management has been upgraded as well. The company’s full-temperature-range thermal management architecture includes direct cooling for the Blade Battery and intelligent cabin climate control, helping maximize energy efficiency across a wide range of operating conditions.

The system is supported by advanced electronics, including a world-first three-controller integration architecture and BYD’s 7-in-1 electronic control technology. Together, these systems enable faster processing, improved vehicle control, and enhanced driving refinement.

Up to 646 Miles of Combined Range

The efficiency gains achieved through DM 5.0 translate into impressive real-world numbers.

The DOLPHIN G DM-i offers up to 65 miles (WLTC Combined) of pure-electric driving range, making it suitable for most daily commutes without using gasoline. When combining a full battery charge with a full fuel tank, the hatchback can travel up to 646 miles.

Weighted fuel consumption is rated at just 201.7 mpg with a fully charged battery, while maximum system output reaches 212 PS. Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph takes 8.3 seconds.

According to BYD, the combination of EV-like daily usability and long-distance flexibility positions the DOLPHIN G DM-i as a disruptive entrant in the European hatchback segment.

Compact Exterior, Spacious Interior

Measuring 4,160 mm long and 1,825 mm wide, the DOLPHIN G DM-i sits squarely in the heart of Europe’s popular supermini category.

A generous 2,610 mm wheelbase helps maximize interior space, while the luggage compartment offers up to 425 liters of cargo capacity, making the vehicle practical for family and everyday use.

Premium Technology Comes Standard

BYD continues its strategy of offering advanced technology across its lineup, equipping the DOLPHIN G DM-i with features that are often optional or unavailable in the B-segment.

Standard equipment includes:

– A 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen with Google built-in, including Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play.
– Front and rear parking sensors.
– A 360-degree surround-view camera.
– Heated front seats and heated steering wheel.
– Courtesy puddle lights.
– 18-inch alloy wheels.
– Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality for powering external devices.

Two Blade Battery Options Available

The DOLPHIN G DM-i will be offered with two Blade Battery configurations.

Entry-level Active models feature a 7.42 kWh battery pack, providing up to 24.8 miles of electric range and a combined range of 633 miles.

Boost, Comfort, and Sport variants receive a larger 18.3 kWh Blade Battery, extending electric-only driving range to 65 miles and increasing total range to 646 miles. These versions also reduce CO₂ emissions from 60 g/km to as low as 32 g/km.

Charging capabilities vary by trim level. Active models include a 3.3 kW onboard charger, while higher trims upgrade to a 6.6 kW charger and add 39 kW DC fast-charging. With DC charging, the larger battery can be replenished from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes.

European Deliveries Begin Later This Year

Orders for the BYD DOLPHIN G DM-i are already open in several European markets. Customer deliveries are expected to begin in late summer.

With class-leading efficiency, substantial electric driving range, advanced technology, and competitive practicality, the DOLPHIN G DM-i showcases how BYD’s latest DM 5.0 Super Hybrid system could reshape expectations for plug-in hybrid hatchbacks in Europe.
