Volvo EX60 Production Begins in Sweden as Demand Surges

Volvo Cars has officially started production of its new fully electric EX60, marking a major milestone in the brand’s transition toward electrification.

Customer deliveries of the mid-size electric SUV are scheduled to begin in early summer, with strong early demand already driving plans for increased output.

Built in Sweden, Designed for Global Impact

The EX60 is being manufactured at Volvo’s Torslanda plant near Gothenburg, reinforcing Sweden’s role as a hub for premium EV development. Notably, the EX60 is the first fully electric Volvo model to be entirely designed, developed, and produced in the country.

This move underscores Volvo’s long-term commitment to its domestic manufacturing base while positioning the EX60 as a key export product. With ambitious production targets, the model is expected to become one of Sweden’s most valuable exports and a significant contributor to regional economic growth.

Production Expansion Driven by Strong Demand

Following a highly positive reception since its reveal earlier this year, Volvo has already confirmed plans to ramp up EX60 production for 2026. Demand has been particularly strong in major European markets such as Sweden and Germany, with order volumes exceeding internal forecasts.

To meet this surge, Volvo is considering extending operations at the Torslanda plant, potentially keeping it open for an additional week over the summer—an unprecedented move in the facility’s history. Order books for North America and Asian markets are also set to open soon, which could further accelerate demand.

Performance, Range, and Charging

The EX60 is positioned as a game-changing model in the competitive electric SUV segment. It offers a claimed driving range of up to 503 miles on a single charge, placing it among the leaders in its class.

Charging performance is equally impressive, with the battery capable of going from 10 to 80 percent in just 16 minutes under optimal conditions. Volvo has also aligned pricing with its popular XC60 plug-in hybrid, aiming to make the transition to full electrification more accessible to a broader audience.

Major Investment in Manufacturing Innovation

To support the EX60 and future EV production, Volvo has invested approximately SEK 10 billion into upgrading the Torslanda facility. The modernization includes advanced mega casting technology, a new battery assembly plant, and fully revamped paint and final assembly lines.

These upgrades not only enhance production efficiency but also ensure the plant is ready for next-generation electric vehicles, strengthening Volvo’s competitive position in the global EV market.

A Key Growth Driver for Volvo

The EX60 is expected to play a central role in Volvo’s future growth strategy, combining strong consumer demand with scalable production capabilities. As the company accelerates its electrification roadmap, the EX60 stands out as a cornerstone model designed to deliver both volume and profitability in the years ahead.
