Jeep recalls 194,000 plug-in hybrid SUVs over fire risks

Jeep has issued a worldwide recall for over 194,000 plug-in hybrid SUVs due to a fire hazard that can occur even when the ignition is off.

The company has urged owners to avoid charging their vehicles and park them outdoors until repairs are completed.

The recall affects the 2020-2024 Wrangler 4xe and 2022-2024 Grand Cherokee 4xe models. The recall includes 154,000 vehicles in the United States, 14,000 in Canada, 700 in Mexico and nearly 26,000 outside North America.

Stellantis, Jeep’s parent company, has stated that a solution is in development and affected customers will be notified when service appointments can be scheduled. The company has also indicated that the risk of fire is lower when the battery charge is low.

An investigation triggered by a review of customer data identified 13 fires, resulting in two injuries. Stellantis estimates that approximately 5% of the recalled SUVs may be affected by this issue.
