2013-2016 Fiat 500e recalled to fix software glitch

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling certain model year 2013-2016 Fiat 500e electric cars to fix a software glitch.

According to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, more than 16,500 Fiat 500e electric cars are at risk of coming to a slow stop as they lose the ability to move forward.

The automaker announced in a press release that in “a routine component check by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles discovered certain vehicles are equipped with software that may misread operating conditions and shut down propulsion”.

The particular problem relates to the power inverter module (PIM), according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The agency indicated that the PIM may “experience voltage spikes which can cause” the loss of propulsion. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles hasn’t yet received any reports of injuries or collisions linked to the problem.

The recall affects 16,549 vehicles registered in the U.S. Owners of those vehicles will soon receive a recall notice by mail, instructing them to take their cars to a Fiat dealership for service. Dealers will upgrade the 500e’s software to resolve the issue, and the fix will be carried out at no charge to owners.

If you own one of these vehicles and have further questions, you’re encouraged to contact the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Customer Care Center at 1-800-853-1403.
