Chinese electric vehicle maker XPENG is expanding its partnership with Google, bringing native Google Play integration to its vehicles from early 2027. The move will give drivers and passengers access to a growing selection of in-car apps without needing to connect a smartphone.
Built on Android Automotive OS, the integration will combine Google’s app ecosystem with XPENG’s AI-powered intelligent cockpit, expanding the digital services available directly through the vehicle’s infotainment system.
The upcoming integration will give XPENG owners access to hundreds of automotive-optimized applications available through Google Play across more than 100 countries. The selection will cover music and podcasts, video streaming, navigation, charging and parking services, news, games for use while parked, and everyday lifestyle applications.
The system is designed to provide a phone-optional experience, allowing users to access supported apps directly from the vehicle’s display rather than relying on a connected smartphone.
App availability will vary by market, vehicle model, and applicable safety requirements. XPENG has not yet announced which models will receive the integration or provided a complete list of supported applications.
The Google Play integration will work alongside XPENG’s existing intelligent cockpit technology, including its multilingual AI-powered voice assistant. Drivers and passengers will be able to use voice commands to open and interact with downloaded applications, making digital services more accessible through the vehicle’s existing interface.
Another key benefit is the potential for a more flexible software experience. Developers will be able to publish new applications and updates through Google Play, allowing the in-car app selection to evolve without requiring major, full-vehicle over-the-air software updates for every app change.
The approach could make XPENG vehicles more adaptable over time, as new services become available and existing applications receive improvements.
However, the company has not yet detailed how individual apps will be approved, distributed, or updated across different vehicles and markets.
The announcement builds on the companies’ existing collaboration, including XPENG’s integration of Google Maps’ Automotive Software Development Kit (Auto SDK), announced in July 2026.
That partnership introduced an updated navigation experience for XPENG drivers and provided foundational mapping capabilities for the company’s advanced driver-assistance systems in overseas markets.
With Google Play, the collaboration is expanding beyond navigation into a broader digital ecosystem covering entertainment, mobility services, and everyday applications.
Dr. Xianming Liu, XPENG’s vice president and head of its General Intelligence Center, said the Google Maps collaboration established a foundation for deeper integration, with Google Play extending the partnership to a wider range of digital services.
Haris Ramic, Android for Cars product director at Google, said the integration would give XPENG drivers more options for accessing familiar entertainment and everyday applications directly from the dashboard, supported by Google’s growing developer ecosystem.
The companies also plan to explore additional collaborations that could make applications more useful and naturally integrated into the driving and passenger experience.
Adding Google Play could help XPENG strengthen the appeal of its intelligent electric vehicles, particularly in international markets where access to familiar apps and services can influence the overall ownership experience.
For drivers, the biggest potential advantages are direct access to supported applications, less reliance on smartphones, and an app ecosystem that can expand over time. Charging stops could also become more convenient, with entertainment and other compatible services available through the car’s infotainment display.
The integration will not necessarily bring every Google Play application to every XPENG model. Apps must be compatible with in-car use, and their availability may depend on local regulations, safety restrictions, and the vehicle’s hardware and software.
XPENG is expected to announce additional details about participating models, supported markets, and app availability closer to the planned early 2027 launch.
