The new BMW iX5 60 xDrive has demonstrated its high-power charging capability in Southern California, with the electric SUV briefly displaying 464 kW during a media event involving BMW, IONNA and charging hardware specialist Alpitronic.
The reading slightly exceeded BMW’s advertised 460 kW maximum. More relevant for road trips, BMW estimates the iX5 can add up to 170 miles of driving range in 10 minutes under suitable conditions.
BMW says charging the U.S.-specification iX5’s 144 kWh usable battery from 10% to 80% takes approximately 22 minutes. Its charging-time and range-added figures are manufacturer estimates based on testing using EPA procedures.
The 464 kW display reading represents a brief peak rather than power maintained throughout a charging session. Actual performance depends on battery temperature, state of charge and the charger’s available output.
That makes the charging curve—and how long the vehicle sustains higher power—just as relevant as the headline maximum.
Alpitronic supplied the high-power charging equipment, while IONNA brought its charging network expertise to the demonstration.
However, BMW explicitly says the equipment used to demonstrate 460 kW charging does not represent hardware commercially available in the United States today. The event therefore shows what the vehicle and compatible equipment can achieve together, rather than a charging speed drivers should expect across existing public stations.
IONNA says its network development also focuses on reliability, vehicle compatibility, digital integration and convenient locations, alongside discounts for eligible BMW drivers.
Gen6 Technology Brings 800-Volt Charging
The iX5 uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, which debuted in the iX3. Its 800-volt architecture, updated electric motors and redesigned battery system support faster charging, longer range and bidirectional charging.
New cylindrical battery cells replace the prismatic cells used in BMW’s previous Gen5 system. According to BMW, the cylindrical cells deliver 20% higher energy density, helping improve energy storage within the battery.
The California demonstration puts the charging capability of that new technology into focus as BMW prepares to expand its next-generation electric lineup.
2027 BMW iX5 Price and U.S. Launch
The 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive is scheduled to reach the U.S. market in the first quarter of 2027, priced from $79,800, plus a $1,450 destination and handling charge.
BMW’s launch announcement estimated up to 435 miles of driving range, based on internal testing following EPA procedures. That figure should be treated as a preliminary manufacturer estimate rather than a final EPA rating.
The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive SUV produces 425 kW and 593 lb-ft of torque, with BMW estimating a 0–60 mph time of 4.4 seconds.
Production is planned at BMW’s Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, where the iX5 will become the facility’s first battery-electric vehicle. Its combination of a large battery and rapid charging targets fewer and shorter stops on longer journeys, provided suitable charging infrastructure is available.
