Factorial Energy and SK On Join Forces to Accelerate Solid-State Battery Manufacturing

As the race to commercialize solid-state batteries intensifies, Factorial Energy has announced a new strategic partnership with SK On aimed at accelerating the transition from laboratory breakthroughs to large-scale manufacturing.

The companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to evaluate how SK On’s global battery manufacturing network and existing lithium-ion production facilities could support the future production of Factorial’s next-generation solid-state battery technology.

The collaboration combines Factorial’s advanced battery cell technology with SK On’s extensive manufacturing expertise, marking another important step toward bringing solid-state batteries to the electric vehicle market.

Bringing Solid-State Batteries Closer to Mass Production

While solid-state batteries promise higher energy density, improved safety and faster charging compared with today’s lithium-ion cells, one of the industry’s biggest challenges remains large-scale production.

Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly assess the technical feasibility and manufacturing requirements of Factorial’s proprietary FEST® (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology) platform. The evaluation will focus on determining how existing lithium-ion production lines could be adapted for future solid-state battery manufacturing.

By leveraging established manufacturing infrastructure instead of building entirely new factories, Factorial aims to accelerate commercialization while reducing industrialization costs.

Factorial CEO Siyu Huang emphasized that technological breakthroughs only become meaningful when they can be produced at commercial scale. The partnership with SK On is intended to help integrate solid-state battery production into one of the world’s most advanced battery manufacturing ecosystems.

SK On Adds Manufacturing Strength

SK On is among the world’s largest EV battery manufacturers, supplying battery packs to major automakers including Hyundai Motor Group, Ford, Volkswagen, and Ferrari.

The company currently operates more than 200 GWh of annual battery production capacity worldwide, with approximately 100 GWh located in the United States. Its American manufacturing footprint includes a 22 GWh facility in Commerce, Georgia, alongside additional operations in Tennessee.

That production scale makes SK On a valuable partner as Factorial evaluates pathways toward commercial manufacturing.

According to Ki-soo Park, Head of the Institute of Future Technology at SK On, the collaboration will help assess both the technical readiness and manufacturing viability of solid-state battery technologies while supporting the company’s continued investment in next-generation battery innovation.

Beyond Electric Vehicles

Although electric vehicles remain the primary focus, Factorial’s technology is designed for a much broader range of applications.

Its high-energy-density solid-state batteries are intended to power:

– Next-generation electric vehicles
– Aerospace and aviation systems
– Hyperscale data centres
– Other high-performance mobility applications

The company says its battery architecture enables smaller and lighter battery packs while improving overall system efficiency for demanding use cases across land, air and even orbital applications.

A Capital-Light Growth Strategy

The agreement also reflects Factorial’s broader strategy of expanding through partnerships rather than investing heavily in dedicated manufacturing facilities.

Instead of constructing new production plants, the company is working with established battery manufacturers capable of adapting existing lithium-ion production lines for future solid-state technologies. If successful, this approach could significantly shorten the timeline for commercial deployment.

The current Memorandum of Understanding is non-binding, with both companies expected to negotiate definitive agreements as technical evaluations progress.

Why It Matters

Solid-state batteries are widely viewed as one of the most significant future advancements in electric vehicle technology, offering the potential for greater driving range, faster charging times and improved safety.

By partnering with one of the world’s largest battery manufacturers, Factorial is taking another important step toward proving that its technology can be manufactured at commercial scale. If the collaboration demonstrates compatibility with existing production infrastructure, it could accelerate the arrival of solid-state batteries in future EVs and other energy-intensive industries.
