smart Concept #2 Teased: Reinventing the Iconic Electric City Car

Smart is pushing its urban mobility vision further with the unveiling of the smart Concept #2, a design study that reimagines the brand’s iconic two-seater for the all-electric era. The concept offers the clearest indication yet of what a future smart #2 production model could look like, blending heritage with a bold, fashion-inspired design direction.

The debut comes ahead of the brand’s Global Brand Event in Beijing, followed by a major showcase at Auto Beijing 2026, where smart will present both the Concept #2 and its new flagship sedan.

A Modern Take on the Iconic Two-Seater

The smart Concept #2 builds on the DNA of the legendary Smart Fortwo, long recognized as one of the most distinctive urban vehicles. This new concept preserves the compact footprint but transforms it into a more expressive, premium product designed for modern city life.

Rather than focusing purely on practicality, the Concept #2 introduces a design philosophy where functionality meets personal expression. Developed by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, the vehicle reflects smart’s global “Love, Pure, Unexpected” styling language.

A standout feature is its minimalist yet striking exterior. The matte white and warm gold two-tone finish gives the car a premium, almost fashion-like identity, while subtle details—such as buckle-inspired elements and leather accents—add a level of craftsmanship rarely seen in this segment. The compact silhouette remains central, acting as a canvas for customization and individuality.

Designed for the Electric Era

The Concept #2 is more than a design exercise—it signals smart’s continued shift toward a fully electric lineup. By retaining the essence of a two-seater city car while elevating its visual and emotional appeal, the concept highlights how small EVs can evolve beyond simple transportation into lifestyle products.

This approach reflects a broader industry trend where urban EVs are no longer just about efficiency and size, but also about design, identity, and premium appeal.

smart #6 EHD: A New Direction for the Brand

Sharing the spotlight in Beijing will be the world premiere of the smart #6 EHD, a completely different proposition. Positioned as the brand’s first premium fastback sedan, the model targets a higher segment and showcases smart’s ambition to expand beyond compact city cars.

Also styled by the Mercedes-Benz design team, the #6 EHD blends sportiness with elegance and introduces a new design direction for the brand. Initially, the model will be exclusive to the Chinese market, underlining the importance of China in smart’s global strategy.

Expanding the smart EV Portfolio

With both the Concept #2 and the #6 EHD, smart is clearly broadening its product range to appeal to a wider audience. From ultra-compact urban mobility solutions to premium sedans, the brand is positioning itself as a versatile EV player across multiple segments.

This expansion aligns with smart’s ongoing “Change of Perspectives” campaign, which aims to challenge traditional views of the brand and highlight its transformation into a modern, all-electric mobility provider.

What Comes Next

While the smart Concept #2 remains a design study for now, it provides a strong indication of the next-generation electric city car. If brought to production, it could redefine expectations for compact EVs—combining small dimensions with premium design and personalization.

As smart continues to evolve, the combination of heritage-inspired concepts and new segment entries signals a clear direction: urban mobility is no longer just about getting around—it’s about making a statement.
