Volkswagen has officially opened pre-sales for its all-new ID.UNYX 08 electric SUV in China, marking a major milestone in its collaboration with Xpeng.
The model represents the first jointly developed vehicle between the two companies and signals a significant push in Volkswagen’s “in China, for China” strategy.
The ID.UNYX 08 is priced between 239,900 yuan ($34,700) and 299,900 yuan ($43,380), positioning it competitively in China’s crowded electric SUV market. Early customers can secure a reservation with a small deposit and benefit from launch incentives, including discounts, a free home charging station, and a lifetime warranty.
A Fast-Tracked Collaboration
The ID.UNYX 08 went from agreement to production in just 24 months—an unusually rapid timeline for a global automaker. Built at the Volkswagen Anhui plant, the model highlights the growing importance of localized development as foreign brands adapt to China’s fast-evolving EV landscape.
This launch is particularly crucial for Volkswagen, which has struggled to gain traction in China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) segment despite its dominance in internal combustion engine (ICE) sales.
Large Electric SUV With Distinctive Design
The ID.UNYX 08 is a mid-to-large-size electric crossover measuring 5,000 mm in length, 1,954 mm in width, and 1,672 mm in height, with a 3,030 mm wheelbase. Its styling deviates from Volkswagen’s traditional design language, featuring:
– A closed front fascia with split headlights
– LED daytime running lights made up of hundreds of programmable elements
– Hidden door handles and sculpted body lines
– Dual rear light bars with an illuminated logo
– 20- or 21-inch alloy wheels
The result is a more futuristic look tailored to Chinese consumer preferences.
Xpeng-Powered Smart Driving Tech
One of the standout features of the ID.UNYX 08 is its advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), powered by Xpeng’s Vision-Language-Action (VLA 2.0) architecture.
The system delivers up to 1,500 TOPS of computing power thanks to dual Turing chips, making Volkswagen the first automaker to commercialize this technology. It integrates data from 11 cameras, 3 mm-wave radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors.
This enables advanced Navigate-on-Autopilot (NOA) functionality for both highway and urban driving scenarios, putting it in direct competition with leading Chinese smart EVs.
Premium Interior With Advanced Tech
Inside, the ID.UNYX 08 is designed with a strong focus on digitalization and comfort:
– Dual 15-inch connected displays
– Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P-powered infotainment system
– AI voice assistant with offline capability
– 20-speaker premium audio system
– Wireless charging and minimalist center console
Comfort features include ventilated, heated, and massage front seats, a 6.7-liter onboard refrigerator, and power-adjustable rear seats. Cargo capacity reaches up to 1,845 liters with seats folded, making it highly practical for families.
Performance, Battery, and Charging
The ID.UNYX 08 offers both single-motor and dual-motor configurations:
– RWD version: 230 kW (308 hp)
– AWD version: Up to 370 kW (496 hp)
The SUV uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries supplied by CATL, available in 82.4 kWh and 95 kWh capacities. It delivers a driving range between 630 km and 730 km (CLTC).
Built on an 800-volt architecture with silicon carbide technology, the vehicle supports ultra-fast charging—adding up to 150 km of range in just five minutes under optimal conditions.
Launch Timeline
While an official launch date has not yet been confirmed, the ID.UNYX 08 is expected to debut publicly at the Beijing Auto Show 2026, with market entry planned for the first half of the year.
A Major EV Push Toward 2030
The ID.UNYX 08 also kicks off Volkswagen’s largest electric vehicle product campaign in China to date.
Following a strategic shift into what the company calls “Delivery Mode”, Volkswagen plans to significantly expand its EV lineup in the coming years:
– 20+ new NEV models launching in 2026
– 50 new NEV models planned by 2030
