MAN Launches Electric Bus Production in Ankara with Lion’s City E

MAN Truck & Bus is accelerating its transition to zero-emission mobility with the start of series production of the MAN Lion’s City E at its manufacturing facility in Ankara. The move marks a significant milestone in the company’s electrification strategy and strengthens its global production network for electric buses.

The first units have already rolled off the assembly line in recent weeks, signaling the company’s commitment to meeting growing demand for sustainable urban transport solutions. The Ankara plant now joins other electrified production sites in Europe and beyond, further boosting MAN’s manufacturing capacity for zero-emission vehicles.

Strengthening a Global E-Mobility Network

The addition of Ankara complements existing production hubs, including the Polish facility in Starachowice, which has been producing electric buses at scale since 2020. Thousands of Lion’s City E models have already been delivered from that site across Europe.

Beyond Europe, MAN is also producing the MAN Lion’s Explorer E in Olifantsfontein, targeting regional demand in South Africa. This multi-site production strategy allows MAN to respond flexibly to different market needs while scaling up its electric vehicle portfolio globally.

The broader transition also includes electrification across its truck manufacturing network. Series production of the MAN eTGX and MAN eTGS began in Munich in 2025, while preparations are underway in Krakow for upcoming models, including the light-duty MAN eTGL.

Ankara Becomes a Key E-Mobility Hub

Significant investments have been made to modernize the Ankara facility, including upgrades to infrastructure, optimized production processes, and specialized workforce training. The plant is designed with flexibility in mind, enabling the production of both electric and conventional buses on the same line.

Looking ahead, MAN plans to expand production in Ankara to include additional electric models, such as intercity buses and the upcoming MAN Lion’s Coach E. This positions the Turkish facility as a central hub in MAN’s long-term electrification roadmap.

MAN Lion’s City E: Driving Strong Market Growth

Since its debut in 2019, the MAN Lion’s City E has established itself as one of Europe’s leading electric city buses. Around 3,300 units have been produced and delivered, collectively covering approximately 250 million kilometers in real-world operation.

These vehicles have helped reduce CO2 emissions by roughly 150,000 tons compared to diesel equivalents, highlighting the environmental benefits of electrified public transport.

The momentum continues to build. In 2025, MAN reported a 168% increase in sales of fully electric trucks and buses, reaching 1,970 units. The Lion’s City E alone saw sales grow by 118% year-over-year, with more than 1,300 units sold—setting a new record for the company. Notably, electric models now account for about half of MAN’s city bus sales in Europe.

Expanding a Comprehensive Electric Bus Portfolio

The success of the Lion’s City E is supported by a diverse and growing product lineup. The range includes compact 10-meter buses, standard 12-meter models, and 18-meter articulated variants for high-capacity routes, as well as low-entry versions designed for intercity applications.

Additionally, the MAN Lion’s Chassis E enables customization for markets beyond Europe, further expanding MAN’s global reach.

With a broad portfolio covering urban, regional, and future long-distance transport needs, MAN is positioning itself as a key player in the shift toward sustainable mobility worldwide.
