Virgin Media O2 Adds 101 Renault Master E-Tech Electric Vans to Fleet

Virgin Media O2 is accelerating its fleet electrification strategy with the addition of 101 new Renault Master E-Tech electric vans, reinforcing its commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

The all-electric vans will be deployed nationwide to support the company’s Network Engineers, who maintain Virgin Media O2’s broadband infrastructure around the clock. With engineers operating in both dense urban centres and remote rural areas, vehicle capability and reliability were key selection criteria.

Built as a True Mobile Workspace

Each Master E-Tech electric has been comprehensively converted to meet frontline engineering demands. The specification includes:

  • Full rear racking system
  • Integrated workbench
  • Additional interior lighting
  • 240V inverter power supply
  • Key-out safety system
  • Ladder loaders
  • Roof-mounted solar panel

The result is a fully functional mobile workspace designed for productivity on-site, every day of the year.

The vehicles are supplied via Ayvens, with Lookers acting as the supplying retailer. Each van is expected to cover around 13,000 miles annually over a planned five-year lifecycle, supporting a busy schedule of essential maintenance work.

Why the Renault Master E-Tech Electric?

Following a competitive evaluation process, the Master E-Tech electric stood out for two decisive reasons:

– WLTP range of up to 285 miles
– Availability in the highly sought-after L2H2 (medium length, medium roof) configuration

The L2H2 format provides generous rear headroom, allowing engineers to work comfortably inside the vehicle, while maintaining a manoeuvrable wheelbase ideal for town and city environments. Parking on tight residential streets and accessing restricted urban locations is significantly easier compared to larger wheelbase alternatives.

Under the hood, the Master E-Tech electric features a 105kW (300Nm) electric motor paired with an 87kWh battery pack. DC fast charging enables up to 142 miles of range in just 30 minutes, giving fleet operators flexibility between overnight depot charging and rapid top-ups during operational shifts.

Supporting a Long-Term Net Zero Strategy

Michael Brown, Head of Fleet and EV Propositions at Virgin Media O2, highlighted that vehicle suitability was critical for engineers operating nationwide. The combination of long electric range and practical configuration made the Master E-Tech electric the right fit for daily operational demands.

For Renault, the deal further underlines how electric light commercial vehicles are now delivering real-world capability at scale. The multi-award-winning Master platform continues to set benchmarks in the large van segment, offering load volumes from 11 to 20 cubic metres alongside enhanced payload capacity.

Electric LCV Adoption Accelerates

Large-scale deployments like this demonstrate how electric vans are increasingly viable for demanding, high-mileage fleet applications. With strong range figures, fast-charging capability and purpose-built interior conversions, electric LCVs are no longer limited to last-mile urban delivery roles.

For Virgin Media O2, the addition of 101 electric vans represents another tangible step toward decarbonising its operations — while ensuring the UK’s broadband network remains supported 24/7.
