SEAT & CUPRA have officially kicked off series production of battery systems at their Martorell facility, marking a major milestone in their electrification strategy—and setting the stage for the highly anticipated CUPRA Raval.
The start of battery production represents the final step before the Raval hits the streets this summer, becoming the first model from the Volkswagen Group’s Electric Urban Car Family to roll out of the Spanish plant.
The Martorell-produced batteries won’t just power the Raval. They’ll also be used in the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Polo, reinforcing the plant’s role as a central hub for compact EV production in Europe.
This dual-model production strategy is transforming Martorell into a flexible, high-output EV manufacturing center—ready to meet the demands of the next generation of electric mobility.
Unified Cell Technology at the Core
At the heart of these battery systems is Volkswagen Group’s “Unified Cell” architecture—a scalable platform designed to streamline production across brands and vehicle segments.
Each battery pack integrates advanced electronic controls alongside high-density cells, ensuring optimal performance, efficiency, and safety. A key component, the “E Box,” acts as the brain of the battery system and is produced at the El Prat Components facility, highlighting a major industrial shift from traditional gearbox manufacturing to EV technology.
High-Speed, High-Volume Production
The numbers behind the Martorell battery plant are impressive:
– Up to 1,200 battery systems produced daily
– Annual capacity of 300,000 units
– One battery completed every 45 seconds
The production process combines automation with precision engineering. It includes parallel assembly lines for electrical components and battery cell stacking using efficient cell-to-pack technology. Once assembled, each unit undergoes rigorous quality checks before being transported via a 600-meter automated bridge directly to vehicle assembly lines.
A Sustainable Manufacturing Approach
Sustainability is also a key focus. The 64,000 m² facility is equipped with 11,000 solar panels, supplying around 70% of the plant’s energy needs. This significantly reduces the carbon footprint of battery production while supporting broader environmental goals.
The factory, built in under two years, employs around 500 highly trained workers—blending automation with skilled labor to ensure consistent quality and output.
Strengthening Europe’s EV Ecosystem
With this launch, SEAT & CUPRA are playing a crucial role in strengthening Europe’s battery supply chain and accelerating EV adoption across the continent.
The year 2026 marks a turning point, as the company begins full-scale electric vehicle production in Martorell. Backed by a €10 billion investment through the Future: Fast Forward initiative, and in collaboration with Volkswagen Group and PowerCo, Spain is rapidly emerging as a key EV production hub in Europe.
