BYD Hit by Sharp January Decline Despite Global EV Push

China’s electric vehicle giant BYD has hit a noticeable speed bump at the start of the year. Despite its dominant position in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market, the company reported a sharp drop in sales in January, reflecting broader weakness across the automotive industry.

According to figures, BYD sold 210,051 NEVs in January, representing a 30.11% decline year-on-year and a steep 50.04% drop compared to December. These numbers highlight how challenging the market environment has become, even for industry leaders.

Passenger vehicles continue to make up the vast majority of BYD’s NEV sales, but they also accounted for most of the decline. In January, BYD sold 205,518 passenger NEVs, down 30.67% from the same period last year and 50.45% month-on-month.

Breaking this down further shows pressure across both major passenger segments:

– Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): BYD sold 83,249 passenger BEVs, a 33.60% year-on-year decrease and a dramatic 56.35% drop from December.
– Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs): Passenger PHEV sales reached 122,269 units, down 28.53% year-on-year. This marks the 10th consecutive month of year-on-year decline for this segment. Month-on-month, sales fell 45.43%.

The sustained decline in PHEV sales suggests that consumer demand may be shifting or that competition within the segment is intensifying.

BYD’s commercial NEV segment provided a rare bright spot on a yearly basis. The company sold 4,533 commercial NEVs in January, up 10.78% year-on-year. However, even here, momentum slowed compared to the previous month, with sales down 19.26% from December.

While commercial vehicles remain a small portion of BYD’s overall sales, their relative resilience could become increasingly important if passenger demand continues to weaken.

One area where BYD continues to show strength is overseas markets. In January, the company exported 100,482 NEVs, a 51.47% increase year-on-year. That said, exports also declined 24.55% month-on-month, indicating that seasonal or market-wide factors may be affecting global demand as well.

Still, the strong annual growth in exports suggests that BYD’s international expansion strategy is helping offset some domestic pressure.
