Over 320K Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler PHEVs recalled for battery fire risk

Stellantis is recalling an estimated 320,065 U.S.-market plug-in hybrid SUVs to resolve a potential fire risk.

The recall affects certain model-year 2020-2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe SUVs. Additional vehicles are affected in Canada (est. 20,753), Mexico (est. 2,653) and certain markets outside North America (est. 32,238).

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall applies to 228,221 Wrangler 4xe and 91,844 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrids.

The affected vehicles may have a battery pack with cells that have separator damage, which may lead to a vehicle fire. About 5 percent of those vehicles are estimated to contain the defect.

A company review of customer data led to an internal investigation that discovered 19 fires.

Vehicle risk is reduced when the battery charge level is depleted. Accordingly, owners are advised to refrain from recharging. Out of an abundance of caution, the company is also advising owners of these vehicles to park away from structures or other vehicles until the remedy is obtained.

A remedy is imminent and affected customers will be notified when they may schedule service. The company urges owners to follow the instructions on their recall notices. Owners can expect to be notified by mail starting Dec. 2 and can contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403. The NHTSA recall number is 25V-741.
