Automotive giant Stellantis is recalling 44,500 hybrid crossover SUVs worldwide due to a potential brake pedal failure. The recall affects certain 2024-2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale and 2024 Dodge Hornet plug-in hybrid models, all of which share the same platform.
Approximately 21,000 of the recalled vehicles are in the United States, with the remainder distributed across Canada, Mexico, and other global markets. Stellantis estimates that 5% of these vehicles have faulty brake pedals.
The issue involves the brake pedal potentially disengaging while being applied. While no injuries have been reported, Stellantis is aware of 15 instances of the problem, including one crash.
To address the issue, dealers will reinforce the brake pedal assembly with a bolt and nut. Stellantis also recommends that owners utilize the electronic parking brake or automatic emergency braking system in the event of a loss of braking power.
As of September 30, Stellantis has sold 15,566 Hornets and 2,737 Tonales in the United States.
