German automakers Audi and Porsche are jointly recalling over 34,000 electric vehicles due to concerns about a potential fire hazard.
The recall affects 27,527 Porsche Taycan models from 2020 to 2024 and ,6499 Audi e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT models from 2022 to 2024.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified a manufacturing defect in the high-voltage battery modules that could lead to a short circuit and, in some cases, a fire. The issue stems from supplier production problems.
To address the problem, Porsche and Audi will be conducting a multi-step recall process. Owners will be asked to limit their vehicle’s charge to 80% until diagnostic software can be installed. Subsequently, all affected vehicles will need to be brought to a dealership for a battery inspection and software update. If necessary, the battery modules will be replaced at no cost.
Porsche dealer notifications are scheduled for October 16, with owner notifications to follow on November 29. It’s important to note that Taycan models produced after April 3, 2024, and Audi cell modules produced after May 27, 2023, are not affected by this recall due to production changes.
