Kempower launches 1.2 MW electric truck charging station

The Finnish EV charging manufacturer Kempower has launched its state-of-the-art electric truck charging solution for power ratings above 1 MW.

Kempower’s Megawatt Charging System seeks to be part of the solution to the challenges of electrification of heavy-duty vehicles to meet the EU’s decarbonization goals.

To bridge the market transition towards full megawatt charging adoption in the coming years, the current CCS2 power levels for heavy duty vehicles need to be increased in the short term. In certain truck charging scenarios, such as on-the-move and destination charging, short bursts of high power are needed. That’s why a dual strategy with MCS and High-Power CCS co-existing in the same truck charging ecosystem is a must to drive the zero-emission transition of road transport.

Grid limitations and cost efficiency make power utilization important in all truck charging scenarios. Kempower delivers dynamic charging with all chargers, which means power is distributed according to need. The intelligent distribution system optimizes charging curves and minimizes charging times. By enabling lower power grid connections and cutting idle power wastage, it is also highly cost-efficient for charge point operators.

Based on Kempower’s state-of-the-art technology, the first version of Megawatt Charging Solution comes with a peak power of 1500A, 1.2 MW and a Kempower Mega Satellite ensuring maximum compatibility in the form of either high-power CCS plug or MCS plug. In Kempower’s Megawatt Charging System the MCS and CCS outputs can be in the same system for maximal flexibility, and the unused power can be distributed among several outputs through dynamic power sharing.

As seen in a recent report by McKinsey, by 2040, 85% of new trucks sold in Europe, the US, and China will be zero-emission, mostly electric. This is, according to various European logistics and mobility experts and operators, a trend that is set to grow exponentially within the next decade. But it also poses a number of challenges that will impact on a broad social level in the next decades. Kempower is ready to face these challenges.

Kempower’s Megawatt Charging System is now open for orders in Europe.

“We believe that those of us who today develop the future of sustainable mobility in line with decarbonization goals will have competitive advantages in the sector in the mid and long term. With MCS, we now position ourselves as a leading player in the transition to heavy-duty electric mobility, which is beneficial for the environment and for the quality of life of drivers, who, by driving electric trucks, eliminate noise and vibration from their daily working lives. MCS is contributing to the challenges of tomorrow, today,” says Tomi Ristimäki, CEO of Kempower.
