Nissan Leaf recalled over airbag issue

Nissan North America is recalling a total of 4,520 model-year 2016 Nissan Leaf and Sentra vehicles for an issue with the cars’ passenger airbag.

The Leaf EVs were built from February 24, 2016 to March 23, 2016, while the Sentras were manufactured from February 9, 2016 to March 4, 2016.

Due to a supplier error that has since been corrected, the front passenger airbag wiring harness connector cylinder may have been manufactured out of specification. If the connector cylinder is out of specification, the wiring harness connector may not stay connected to the dual-stage front passenger airbag as designed.

If this occurs, the wiring harness connector could become either fully or partially disengaged from the airbag module, preventing the passenger airbag from deploying in a crash and increasing the risk of an injury. Nissan said it will replace the passenger airbag module and main body harness for free.

Nissan will begin notifying owners later this month. Owners can call the automaker at 800-647-7261, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov, for more info.
