BMW Group has started series production of its sixth-generation (Gen6) high-voltage batteries in Shenyang, China, marking another major step in the global rollout of its next-generation electric vehicle technology.
The batteries will power future BMW Neue Klasse models built in China, supporting the automaker’s plans to improve EV range, charging performance and production efficiency.
Shenyang is the third location in BMW’s global Gen6 battery production network, following Debrecen in Hungary and Irlbach-Straßkirchen in Germany. The move strengthens BMW’s strategy of manufacturing key EV components close to the vehicle assembly plants where they will be used.
BMW Gen6 Batteries Promise More Range and Faster Charging
BMW’s Gen6 high-voltage battery technology introduces several important improvements over the previous battery cell generation. According to the company, the newly developed cylindrical cells deliver more than 20% higher energy density, while charging speed and driving range can improve by up to 30%.
These gains are enabled in part by a new cell-to-pack design. Instead of grouping battery cells into conventional modules, BMW integrates the cylindrical cells directly into the battery housing. This approach makes more efficient use of available space and allows the battery system to be adapted to different vehicle models.
Another key component is BMW’s Energy Master, a centrally developed control unit installed directly on the high-voltage battery. It combines essential power distribution and battery management functions, helping control the battery system more efficiently.
The improvements are expected to play an important role in the Neue Klasse lineup, BMW’s next generation of electric vehicles designed around new vehicle architectures and advanced electric drive technology.
BMW Expands Its Global Battery Production Network
Starting Gen6 battery production in China marks an important milestone in BMW’s efforts to industrialize its latest battery technology across multiple markets.
The company is building its production network around the principle of manufacturing batteries close to the plants assembling the vehicles. This local-for-local approach reduces transportation distances, supports supply chain stability and makes production logistics more efficient.
Following the start of production in Hungary, Germany and now China, BMW also plans to bring additional battery assembly locations online in Woodruff, United States, and San Luis Potosí, Mexico, in the coming months.
Although the facilities operate in different regions, BMW applies common production, quality and safety standards throughout the network. Each location also draws on regional manufacturing capabilities and supplier expertise.
This strategy is particularly important as automakers increase investment in electric vehicles and work to build more resilient supply chains for critical components such as high-voltage batteries.
How BMW Manufactures Its Gen6 High-Voltage Batteries
The Gen6 battery production process combines precision engineering with automated manufacturing and digital quality controls.
Battery cells are inspected before being combined with cooling units to create cell clusters. After laser cleaning, the clusters and their cell contact systems are precisely welded together. A specialized foaming process then bonds the components into a single mechanical structure, helping provide stability, durability and safety.
The battery housing is subsequently closed, sealed and riveted. The Energy Master is installed during the final assembly stage, after which every battery undergoes comprehensive end-of-line testing.
BMW also uses digital production technologies to monitor quality throughout the manufacturing process. Production data is collected and analyzed at each stage, while digital twins, data analytics and AI-supported inspection systems help identify potential defects early.
Laser-welded connections are monitored by inline inspection systems in real time. Before leaving the production line, every high-voltage battery is tested for quality, safety and functionality.
These measures are designed to ensure consistent battery performance across BMW’s global manufacturing network.
Gen6 Batteries Will Support BMW’s Next Electric Vehicle Generation
The start of production in Shenyang highlights how BMW is preparing its manufacturing operations for the next phase of electric vehicle development.
Higher energy density, faster charging and more efficient battery packaging could help make future Neue Klasse models more competitive in an increasingly crowded EV market. At the same time, localized production should help BMW manage logistics, maintain supply continuity and scale manufacturing more efficiently.
With Gen6 battery production now underway in China, Germany and Hungary, BMW is moving closer to establishing a worldwide manufacturing network for its next-generation electric vehicles. The planned expansion into North America will further extend that network.
For BMW, the rollout is about more than introducing a new battery design. It represents a broader effort to combine improved EV technology with localized manufacturing, digital quality assurance and a more resilient global supply chain.
