Volkswagen ID. Cross Debuts as Affordable Electric SUV With Up to 427 km WLTP Range

Volkswagen has unveiled the all-new ID. Cross, a compact all-electric SUV designed to bring premium technology, practical versatility, and competitive pricing to the fast-growing EV market. Positioned below Volkswagen’s larger electric SUVs, the new model combines a spacious interior, advanced driver assistance systems, and up to 427 km (265 miles) of WLTP driving range.

With pricing in Germany starting from €27,995, the ID. Cross aims to make electric mobility more accessible while offering features typically found in vehicles from higher segments.

A New Entry Point Into Volkswagen’s Electric SUV Lineup

The Volkswagen ID. Cross joins the brand’s new family of compact electric vehicles alongside the ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI. Built on Volkswagen’s latest MEB+ electric platform, the compact SUV delivers improved packaging efficiency, modern software, and upgraded charging capabilities.

Measuring 4,153 mm long, the ID. Cross is slightly larger inside than its dimensions suggest. Thanks to the dedicated EV architecture, it provides generous passenger space for five occupants while offering 475 liters (16.8 cubic feet) of cargo capacity. An additional 25-liter front trunk (frunk) gives owners a convenient place to store charging cables and smaller items.

The available vehicle-to-load (V2L) function also allows the battery to power external devices at up to 3.6 kW, making the SUV suitable for camping trips, outdoor activities, and charging electric bikes.

Premium Design Inside and Out

Volkswagen has given the ID. Cross a clean, contemporary appearance that follows the company’s latest electric design language. Signature styling elements include slim LED lighting, a floating roof design, sculpted body lines, and a distinctive rear light signature.

Higher trims add IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, illuminated Volkswagen logos, and 3D LED taillights, creating a more premium appearance.

Inside, Volkswagen focuses on improving perceived quality with soft-touch materials, fabric-covered dashboard surfaces, and redesigned controls. Heated seats, premium interior trim, and a panoramic glass roof are available on higher-spec models.

Large Displays and Smarter Infotainment

The cabin features Volkswagen’s latest digital cockpit and infotainment system.

Drivers receive a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, while a large 12.9-inch touchscreen handles navigation, media, and vehicle settings. Volkswagen has also added a nostalgic display mode that recreates the instrument layout of the original Mk1 Golf while still presenting modern driving information.

The updated infotainment system supports improved connectivity, faster operation, and expanded online services.

Three Powertrains and Two Battery Options

Volkswagen will offer the ID. Cross with three electric motor outputs:

– 85 kW (116 hp)
– 99 kW (135 hp)
– 155 kW (211 hp)

Buyers can choose between:

– 37 kWh net battery
– 52 kWh net battery

The larger battery delivers up to 427 km (265 miles) WLTP on a full charge.

Charging performance includes:

– 11 kW AC charging
– Up to 90 kW DC fast charging for the 37 kWh battery
– Up to 105 kW DC fast charging for the 52 kWh battery

Both battery versions can recharge from 10% to 80% in approximately 24 minutes under optimal conditions.

Advanced Driver Assistance Features

One of the ID. Cross’ biggest highlights is the availability of technology usually reserved for more expensive vehicles.

Optional Connected Travel Assist now incorporates traffic light recognition, allowing the SUV to automatically slow down and stop at red lights within system limits. Volkswagen also introduces One Pedal Driving, enabling stronger regenerative braking controlled primarily through the accelerator pedal.

Additional available features include:

– 360-degree Area View camera
– Park Assist Pro with remote smartphone parking
– Adaptive Cruise Control
– Junction Assist
– Advanced lane keeping functions

Comfortable Ride With Optional Adaptive Suspension

Volkswagen says significant attention was paid to ride quality and refinement during development.

The standard suspension has been tuned specifically for the front-wheel-drive electric platform, while the range-topping 211-horsepower version can be equipped with a newly developed adaptive DCC suspension. The system continuously adjusts damping based on road conditions and driving style, balancing comfort with responsive handling.

Noise reduction measures throughout the cabin further improve long-distance comfort.

Trim Levels and Equipment

The ID. Cross will be available in three trim levels.

The entry-level Trend model already includes 90 kW DC fast charging as standard, while the Life trim adds features such as:

– 18-inch alloy wheels
– Dual-zone automatic climate control
– Adaptive Cruise Control
– Rear-view camera
– Junction Assist

The flagship Style version further upgrades the SUV with:

– IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights
– Heated front seats
– Heated steering wheel
– Illuminated Volkswagen logos
– Personalized interior trim
– Keyless entry and start

Optional equipment includes a 425-watt Harman Kardon premium audio system, electrically adjustable 12-way front seats with pneumatic massage function, memory driver’s seat, and a large panoramic glass roof with an electric sunblind.

Practical for Everyday Driving and Weekend Adventures

Despite its compact footprint, the ID. Cross offers impressive versatility.

Models equipped with the 52 kWh battery can tow trailers weighing up to 1,200 kg (2,646 pounds), making the SUV suitable for small caravans, boats, or motorcycle trailers.

Combined with its spacious cargo area, front trunk, and V2L capability, the ID. Cross is designed to handle both daily commuting and recreational travel.

Pricing and Availability

Volkswagen has opened order books in Germany alongside the model’s official debut.

Initially, customers can order the 155 kW ID. Cross with the 52 kWh battery in Life and Style trims, with prices starting at €36,525.

The more affordable Trend version, equipped with the 85 kW motor and 37 kWh battery, will arrive shortly with a starting price of €27,995, followed by additional powertrain and trim combinations.

With competitive pricing, generous equipment, modern technology, and practical everyday usability, the Volkswagen ID. Cross is positioned to become one of the most compelling electric SUVs in the affordable compact segment.
