EU Car Market Sees Mixed Results in November 2024, EV accounted for 15% market share

Through the first eleven months of 2024, new car registrations remained relatively stable, increasing by just 0.4% to 9.7 million units.

While Spain saw positive growth (+5.1%), France (-3.7%), Germany (-0.4%), and Italy (-0.2%) all experienced declines.

In November 2024, several key trends emerged in the powertrain market:

– Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs): Registrations fell by 9.5% to 130,757 units, primarily due to significant drops in Germany (-21.8%) and France (-24.4%). This resulted in a year-to-date volume 5.4% lower than the previous year, with a market share of 13.4%. November’s BEV market share dropped to 15% from 16.3% the previous year.

– Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs): Registrations also declined by 8.8% in November, with substantial decreases in France (-19.6%), Belgium (-61.4%), and Italy (-31.4%). PHEVs held a 7.6% market share in November, down from 8.1% the previous year. Year-to-date volumes were down 8%.

– Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs): Registrations increased significantly by 18.5% in November, boosting their market share to 33.2% from 27.5% the previous November. For the third consecutive month, HEV registrations surpassed those of petrol cars.

– Petrol cars: Sales dropped by 7.8% in November, with all major markets recording declines. France saw the largest decrease (-31.5%), followed by Italy (-12.3%), Germany (-5.4%), and Spain (-2.3%). Petrol’s market share fell to 30.6% from 32.5% the previous November.

– Diesel cars: The market declined by 15.3%, resulting in a 10.6% market share in November, with decreases observed across most EU markets.
