Lotus Cars has unveiled a powerful new plug-in hybrid version of its Eletre flagship SUV, signaling a major shift in the brand’s electrification strategy. The new model, called the Eletre X in Europe, combines high-performance electric power with a range-extending combustion engine and is set to arrive in European markets this summer.
The vehicle was introduced in China under the name “For Me,” but globally it will be known as the Eletre X, positioned as a distinct model alongside the fully electric Eletre lineup.
939 Horsepower Hybrid Performance
At the heart of the Eletre X is a sophisticated range-extender plug-in hybrid system. The powertrain pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with two synchronous electric motors, one mounted on each axle.
Together, the system produces an impressive 939 horsepower, exceeding the output of the top all-electric Eletre variant.
The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.3 seconds, putting it firmly in the ultra-performance luxury SUV category. That’s only slightly slower than the pure-electric flagship due to the additional weight of the hybrid components.
Lotus CEO Feng Qingfeng highlighted the model’s performance credentials by comparing it with elite rivals such as the Lamborghini Urus during the launch event.
Impressive Electric and Total Range
The Eletre X features a 70 kWh battery pack powering the electric motors. According to Lotus, the SUV can travel up to 260 miles on electric power alone under China’s CLTC testing cycle.
Under the more stringent WLTP standard used in Europe, a realistic electric range of around 200 miles is expected — still an impressive figure for a performance-oriented luxury SUV.
When the battery is depleted, the petrol engine acts as a generator, extending the total driving range to up to 877 miles (CLTC) when combining battery and fuel power.
Ultra-Fast Charging Technology
The battery also supports 6C ultra-fast charging, allowing the charge level to jump from 30% to 80% in just eight minutes under optimal conditions. This rapid charging capability helps reduce downtime and keeps the vehicle practical for long-distance travel.
Advanced Chassis Technology
Lotus has also equipped the Eletre X with its latest chassis innovations, including 6D Digital Dynamic Chassis control and a 48-volt adaptive anti-roll bar system designed to minimize body roll and improve handling.
The technology aims to eliminate the “boat-like” feel often associated with large SUVs while maintaining the dynamic driving characteristics Lotus is known for.
Despite the complex hybrid powertrain, the Eletre X weighs between 2,575 kg and 2,625 kg, roughly in line with the all-electric Eletre models.
Competing in the Luxury Hybrid SUV Segment
The introduction of the Eletre X places Lotus directly into competition with high-performance luxury SUVs including the BMW XM.
The move also reflects changing market realities. While Lotus had previously pledged to become a fully electric brand by 2028, adoption of EVs has been slower than anticipated in some regions.
According to CEO Feng Qingfeng, adding plug-in hybrids will help Lotus attract buyers in markets where EV infrastructure and consumer demand are still developing, including parts of Europe and the Middle East.
More Hybrid Models on the Way
The strategy shift may extend beyond the Eletre lineup. Lotus is reportedly planning a plug-in hybrid version of its Lotus Emira sports car to meet upcoming Euro 7 emissions standards rules expected to take effect in 2027.
Meanwhile, the new hybrid technology — called “X-hybrid” — shares similarities with systems used by Lotus’ sister brand Zeekr, suggesting the platform could support even more powerful configurations in the future.
With extreme performance, long electric range, and rapid charging capability, the Eletre X represents a new direction for Lotus — blending electrification with combustion power to broaden the brand’s appeal in the evolving luxury SUV market.
