Hyundai Deploys XCIENT Hydrogen Trucks in Uruguay, First in South America

Hyundai Motor Company is expanding zero-emission transport by deploying a fleet of eight XCIENT Fuel Cell Class 8 trucks in Uruguay.

This marks the first real-world operation of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks in South America, signaling a new phase for clean logistics in the region.

Powering Green Logistics Through the Kahirós Project

At the center of this initiative is the Kahirós Project, a large-scale effort designed to cut emissions in Uruguay’s timber logistics sector. By combining renewable energy and hydrogen technology, the project aims to create a fully integrated clean transport ecosystem.

Uruguay is uniquely positioned for this transition. The country already generates around 99% of its electricity from renewable sources, making it an ideal environment for green hydrogen production.

Backed by a $40 million investment from Santander Group, and supported by global institutions, the project includes a 4.8 MW solar park, a hydrogen production facility capable of generating 77 tons annually and a 10-year deployment plan for hydrogen-powered trucks .

Operations are expected to begin in late 2026, with the fleet projected to cover nearly 1 million kilometers annually during regular service.

A Major Step for Hydrogen Mobility in South America

With this deployment, Uruguay becomes the first country in South America to adopt hydrogen trucks for daily operations, not just pilot testing. This sets a precedent for other nations in the region to follow.

The project brings together key local partners—including Ventus, Fraylog, and Fidocar—alongside Hyundai’s technology and expertise. To ensure reliability, Hyundai is also providing training and after-sales support to local teams.

This initiative highlights how hydrogen can move beyond theory and into practical, large-scale freight applications.

Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell: Built for Long-Haul Zero Emissions

The Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell is designed specifically for demanding logistics operations, offering both performance and sustainability.

Key Specifications:

– Fuel Cell System: 180 kW output from dual stacks
– Electric Motor: 350 kW (469 hp) with 2,237 Nm torque
– Hydrogen Storage: 68 kg capacity across 10 tanks
– Battery Pack: 72 kWh
– Range: Up to 450 miles (720 km)
– Capability: Class 8 truck with up to 82,000 lbs GCW

These specs enable long-haul transport with zero tailpipe emissions, making it a viable alternative to diesel trucks in heavy-duty applications.

Part of Hyundai’s Growing Global Hydrogen Ecosystem

Hyundai’s push in Uruguay is part of a broader global strategy to scale hydrogen mobility.

– North America: 63 trucks operating, surpassing 1.6 million kilometers
– Europe: 165 trucks in service, exceeding 20 million kilometers since 2020

Supporting this expansion is Hyundai’s hydrogen platform, HTWO, which integrates production, storage, and transportation solutions into a unified ecosystem.
