BYD ATTO 2 DM-i Arrives In The UK With 621-Mile Range

While much of the automotive world was still questioning electrification in the late 2000s, BYD took a bold step forward. At the Geneva Motor Show in 2008, the company unveiled the BYD F3DM—one of the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV).

Fast forward nearly two decades, and BYD has produced over 7.7 million plug-in hybrids, cementing its position as a global leader. Now, the company is pushing the technology even further with the all-new BYD ATTO 2 DM-i, set to arrive in the UK in May.

A New Benchmark for Compact Plug-in Hybrid SUVs

The ATTO 2 DM-i represents the latest evolution of BYD’s Dual Mode Intelligent (DM-i) technology. Designed for real-world efficiency, this compact SUV combines strong electric driving capability with long-distance flexibility.

Key highlights include:

– Up to 56 miles (combined) electric-only range
– Up to 621 miles total driving range
– DC fast charging (30%–80% in just 26 minutes)

This marks a significant leap from the original F3DM, which required over seven hours to charge and offered just 37 miles of electric range under the older NEDC cycle.

How DM-i Technology Works

Unlike traditional plug-in hybrids, where the petrol engine often dominates, BYD’s DM-i system prioritizes electric driving.

At its core is a highly efficient 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine with a record-breaking 43% thermal efficiency. However, it typically acts as a generator rather than directly powering the wheels.

The system intelligently switches between three modes:

– EV Mode: Pure electric driving for most urban journeys
– Series Hybrid Mode: Engine generates electricity while the motor drives the wheels
– Parallel Hybrid Mode: Engine assists the motor during high-demand situations

The result is a driving experience that feels closer to a fully electric vehicle, especially in city conditions.

Blade Battery and Fast-Charging Advantage

A key pillar of BYD’s success is its proprietary Blade Battery technology. Using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, it offers improved durability and thermal stability—even under extreme stress conditions like the nail penetration test.

In the ATTO 2 DM-i, this battery works with an intelligent energy management system to deliver faster charging times, enhanced safety and greater longevity.

The inclusion of Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality also allows the SUV to power external devices, effectively turning it into a mobile energy source.

A Growing DM-i Lineup

The ATTO 2 DM-i joins a rapidly expanding family of plug-in hybrid models, including:

– BYD SEAL 6 DM-i – offering up to 935 miles of total range
– BYD SEAL U DM-i – a versatile family SUV with up to 699 miles of range
– BYD SEALION 5 DM-i – delivering up to 631 miles of range at competitive pricing

Together, these models demonstrate how BYD is scaling plug-in hybrid technology across multiple segments, from compact SUVs to large family vehicles.

From Startup to Global Powerhouse

Founded in 1995 with just 20 employees, BYD has grown into a global technology giant with over one million staff and operations in 112 countries. The company now generates an average of 45 patents per day, reflecting its deep commitment to innovation.

From its early days as a battery manufacturer to its current leadership in electrified mobility, BYD has played a crucial role in bringing plug-in hybrid technology into the mainstream.
