Renault Group has signed a binding agreement to acquire full ownership of Flexis SAS, the joint venture launched in 2024 with Volvo Group and CMA CGM Group to develop a new generation of electric light commercial vehicles (LCVs).
Subject to antitrust approvals, Renault Group will purchase Volvo Group’s 45% stake and CMA CGM Group’s 10% stake in Flexis. The deal could be finalised by the end of the first half of 2026.
For European fleet operators and urban logistics providers, this move signals stronger strategic focus and faster execution in the fast-growing electric van market.
Production Confirmed for 2026 in France
Renault Group will now fully oversee development of the all-electric medium van range, with production still scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.
The first model to emerge from the project will be the Renault Trafic Van E-Tech electric, launching from late 2026 onward.
Nearly 1,300 employees across France are already working on the programme, including teams at:
– Guyancourt Technocentre in Île-de-France
– Villiers Saint Frédéric Light Commercial Vehicle Center of Excellence
– Sandouville plant in Normandy, where industrial production will take place
This reinforces France’s position as a key hub for electric van manufacturing in Europe.
A Dedicated EV Platform for Urban Logistics
Despite the governance change, Renault says the project’s ambition and industrial roadmap remain unchanged.
Flexis is developing a purpose-built electric van architecture designed specifically for next-generation urban logistics. Key highlights include:
– Dedicated skateboard platform for improved packaging and flexibility
– 800V electric architecture enabling faster charging and greater efficiency
– SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) architecture for advanced connectivity and fleet optimization
For European cities tightening emissions rules and expanding low-emission zones, this platform is designed to support last-mile delivery, parcel logistics and urban service fleets transitioning away from diesel.
Volvo Trucks to Distribute from 2027
Although Renault Group will take full ownership, Renault Trucks — part of Volvo Group — will distribute the new electric vans from 2027.
This ensures continuity in the long-standing cooperation between Renault Group and Renault Trucks in the light commercial vehicle segment, maintaining strong access to professional customers across Europe.
Strategic Focus on European Decarbonisation
The decision to consolidate ownership under Renault Group comes as Europe accelerates its push toward transport decarbonisation. Electric vans are increasingly central to corporate ESG strategies, urban emission targets and EU climate objectives.
CMA CGM Group, which supported the development phase as part of its broader energy transition strategy, will exit the joint venture but remains aligned with the shift toward electrified logistics.
With full control of Flexis, Renault Group can now streamline development timelines, align software and hardware strategy, and accelerate the rollout of its next-generation electric LCV range.
As Europe’s electric van market intensifies — with legacy manufacturers and new entrants competing aggressively — Renault is positioning itself to play a leading role in the transformation of urban mobility starting in 2026.
