NIO Completes 100 Million Battery Swaps as Power Swap Network Expands Globally

Chinese EV maker NIO has reached a major milestone in the evolution of electric mobility, completing its 100 millionth battery swap. The landmark swap was delivered to an ET5 Touring driver in Haining, Zhejiang Province, marking a defining moment not only for the company but for the wider EV industry.

To celebrate the achievement, NIO Founder, Chairman and CEO William Li joined customers, partners and employees at the NIO Delivery Center in Nanxiang, Shanghai, for a live-streamed event commemorating the milestone.

At the core of NIO’s strategy is its proprietary Power Swap technology, which allows drivers to replace a depleted battery with a fully charged unit in around three minutes — a process designed to rival the speed and convenience of conventional refueling.

Since the first swap station launched in 2018, NIO users have collectively received 5.28 billion kWh of energy through battery swaps. The efficiency gains are significant:

– 83.41 million hours saved compared to conventional EV charging
– Over 88 hours saved per user on average
– More than RMB 26.3 billion ($3.8 billion) saved in energy costs versus petrol refueling
– Around RMB 27,000 ($3,900) saved per user on average

For EV drivers, that translates into lower running costs and dramatically reduced waiting times.

Battery Swapping as a Mainstream EV Solution

Beyond convenience, battery swapping addresses two persistent concerns in electric mobility: battery health and range anxiety.

Each swap effectively acts as a comprehensive battery health check, as NIO’s Power Swap Stations centrally manage and monitor battery performance and safety. In effect, 100 million swaps equal 100 million battery inspections — providing additional reassurance for owners.

Environmentally, the impact is also notable. Compared with similar internal combustion engine vehicles, NIO estimates its low-carbon mobility solution has reduced carbon emissions by 4,169.5 tonnes — equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of roughly 167,000 trees.

In addition, NIO’s swap network has supported grid load shifting exceeding 740 million kWh, helping balance electricity demand and improve overall energy utilization.

Rapid Infrastructure Expansion

Infrastructure remains critical to scaling battery swapping globally. To date, NIO has deployed 3,790 Power Swap Stations worldwide, including 1,020 stations along major highways in China. This extensive highway coverage has significantly reduced long-distance travel concerns for both NIO and ONVO users.

Looking ahead to 2026, NIO plans to:

– Launch its fifth-generation Power Swap Stations
– Add 1,000 additional swap stations
– Expand Power Journeys to 100 routes
– Extend a continuous swap route along the Silk Road

The company also holds more than 2,100 patents in charging and swapping technologies, including over 1,500 specifically related to battery swapping — reinforcing its leadership position in this segment.

“Recharging Beyond Refueling”

The completion of 100 million swaps is more than a symbolic number. It reflects growing user trust and market validation for battery swapping as a scalable, mainstream EV infrastructure solution.

While ultra-fast charging continues to dominate much of the global conversation around electric vehicles, NIO is doubling down on a parallel vision: an ecosystem where “recharging” can be faster and more cost-effective than refueling.

With further infrastructure expansion and next-generation technology on the way, NIO’s milestone may signal that battery swapping is entering a new phase — one defined by scale, profitability and long-term sustainability in the EV energy services market.

As competition intensifies globally, the question is no longer whether battery swapping works — but how far and how fast it can expand beyond China.
