Hyundai Hydrogen Trucks Reach 20 Million Kilometers in Europe

Hyundai Motor Company has reached a major milestone in zero-emission trucking, with its XCIENT Fuel Cell heavy-duty trucks surpassing 20 million kilometers driven across Europe. The achievement highlights the growing role of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) as a viable alternative to diesel trucks in commercial logistics and freight transport.

Over the past five years, 165 Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell Class-8 trucks have been operating in real-world conditions across Switzerland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Austria, demonstrating that hydrogen-powered trucks can deliver reliability, scalability, and zero tailpipe emissions.

Hydrogen Trucks Prove Their Value in Real Logistics Operations

Heavy-duty transport remains one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize. Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell trucks are addressing that challenge by offering long range, fast refueling, and zero exhaust emissions, making them particularly attractive for logistics companies facing stricter climate regulations.

Compared to conventional diesel trucks, XCIENT Fuel Cell vehicles produce no tailpipe CO₂ emissions, helping fleet operators reduce their environmental footprint without sacrificing performance.

Hyundai says the project is not only about reducing emissions, but also about accelerating the development of a global hydrogen ecosystem through partnerships with fleet operators, governments, and energy providers.

Switzerland: The Launchpad for Hydrogen Trucking in Europe

Hyundai first deployed the XCIENT Fuel Cell truck in Switzerland in October 2020. By June 2024, the Swiss fleet alone had already exceeded 10 million kilometers driven, proving the technology’s reliability in demanding commercial use.

The success of the Swiss operations paved the way for expansion into additional European markets and a broader range of applications, including:

– Food and beverage distribution
– Supermarket and retail logistics
– Textile and clothing transport
– Municipal refuse trucks
– Crane trucks with electric power take-off (ePTO) systems

Expanding Hydrogen-Powered Logistics Across Europe

As confidence in hydrogen trucking grew, Hyundai expanded its XCIENT Fuel Cell fleet across Europe:

  • Germany: Supermarket supply chains, textile logistics, and large commercial fleet operators
  • France: Retail logistics, refuse trucks, and crane trucks equipped with ePTO solutions
  • Netherlands: Hydrogen-powered tarpaulin trucks for construction material distribution
  • Austria: Refrigerated hydrogen trucks supporting supermarket deliveries

These deployments demonstrate the flexibility of hydrogen fuel cell trucks across urban delivery, regional transport, and specialized logistics operations.

New-Generation Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck Launched in 2025

Building on its success, Hyundai launched an upgraded XCIENT Fuel Cell truck in 2025, featuring an improved hydrogen fuel cell system designed for greater efficiency and durability.

The new model has undergone extensive real-world testing since 2021, covering multiple climates and use cases, including port operations and medium-distance logistics. Hyundai developed the vehicle in close collaboration with fleet operators to ensure it meets commercial performance requirements.
