The Refined and Electrified Volvo S90 Debuts with Enhanced Technology and Design

Volvo Cars has unveiled the latest iteration of its flagship sedan, the S90, showcasing a blend of heightened elegance, superior comfort, and a comprehensive suite of cutting-edge technology and design enhancements.

The exterior of the new S90 embodies a contemporary aesthetic, reflecting Volvo Cars’ ongoing journey towards full electrification. Inside the cabin, occupants will discover a refreshed environment featuring new premium materials and enhanced functionalities, all centered around a human-centric technological approach.

A key highlight of the updated S90 is the integration of Volvo’s new-generation user interface, a system slated for deployment across the entire vehicle lineup. This intuitive interface is engineered to provide a secure and enjoyable interaction with the infotainment system, offering significantly improved speed and responsiveness compared to its predecessor. Complementing this is a new, larger 11.2-inch free-standing center display, further elevating the user experience. Over-the-air software updates will ensure the vehicle continuously evolves and improves over time.

The plug-in hybrid variant of the new S90 positions itself as an electric vehicle with added reassurance. It boasts an impressive fully electric range of 80 kilometers (50 miles) on a single charge under the WLTP testing cycle, while also providing additional power on demand. This capability suggests that many S90 drivers can undertake their daily commutes with zero tailpipe emissions. Data from Volvo Cars indicates that nearly half of the distance covered by their latest plug-in hybrid vehicles is powered solely by electricity.

For those seeking a different powertrain, the S90 is also available as a mild hybrid. This version features a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with front-wheel drive, delivering both ample power and high efficiency.

Erik Severinson, Chief Product and Strategy Officer at Volvo Cars, stated, “The S90 is a key part of our product portfolio for the coming years in some of our Asian markets. Together with the new fully electric ES90, the new S90 ensures we have a complete and attractive offering for customers who value safety and want to drive a large, sleek Volvo sedan.”

Engineered for Safety

Staying true to Volvo Cars’ long-standing commitment to safety, the new S90 incorporates an advanced safety cage and a comprehensive array of active safety features. The Pilot Assist function provides comfortable assisted driving on both multi-lane highways and single-lane roads. Beyond maintaining a set speed and adapting to slower traffic, the system can follow the vehicle ahead and automatically brake to a complete stop when necessary in stop-and-go conditions. Pilot Assist can also assist the driver by detecting lane markings and providing gentle steering input to help keep the car centered within its lane.

A Fusion of Luxury and Modernity

The exterior design of the new S90 represents a harmonious blend of luxury and contemporary Scandinavian aesthetics, incorporating significant updates. Both the front and rear sections of the car have been redesigned to impart a more modern and fresh appearance to the S90, characterized by a streamlined silhouette, clean lines, and a bolder, more graphical front grille.

The front fascia is distinguished by Volvo Cars’ signature Thor’s Hammer headlights. These modernized headlights feature a slimmer shape and a lens that extends seamlessly to the grille. They incorporate the new Matrix-design LED technology, engineered to provide a wide and long light pattern for optimized visibility in all driving conditions.

At the rear, the new taillights are seamlessly integrated into the overall design, creating a cohesive visual identity. Furthermore, the S90 features a newly sculpted bonnet, front bumper, and front wings. Enhancing passenger comfort, the S90 also introduces improved sound insulation and comes standard with advanced adaptive suspension.

A diverse palette of distinctive exterior colors allows for a high degree of personalization for the Volvo S90, with two new metallic options – Aurora Silver and Mulberry Red – making their debut. Adding to the elegant and powerful character of the new S90 are the new diamond-cut alloy wheels, showcasing contrasting surfaces of raw, polished aluminum and high-gloss black paint.

The new S90 will first become available for order in China this summer, with other selected markets to follow at a later date.
