Volkswagen is recalling nearly 80,000 electric vehicles in the United States due to a software malfunction that causes display screens to remain off.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that this bug can lead to the loss of speedometer information or rearview camera images.
The recall affects 2021-2023 model year ID.4 electric vehicles. Officials warn that the loss of the rearview camera increases the risk of crashes or injuries when the vehicle is reversing. Additionally, losing the speedometer display heightens the risk of accidents.
Volkswagen has stated that there have been no known crashes or injuries related to this issue, although 354 warranty claims have been made concerning the glitch.
Currently, there is no remedy for the issue, and dealers are not allowed to sell or resell affected vehicles until there is one.
NHTSA will notify drivers once a remedy is available. Volkswagen anticipates sending out notices in July, with the glitch being resolved through a software update.
