Nissan is recalling certain 2015-2017 LEAF and 2014, 2016 and 2017 Sentra vehicles.
Due to a manufacturing error within the air bag inflators, the passenger frontal air bag may not properly deploy in the event of a crash.
The defect has been tied to supplier Daicel, a Kentucky-based company and affects a total of 25,283 units.
The problem was discovered during routine tests run by Daicel. To date, Nissan says that it knows of no real-world incidents in which passenger-side air bags have improperly deployed.
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin June 11, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
