The BMW iX3 has achieved a landmark double victory at the World Car Awards, securing both the 2026 “World Car of the Year” and “World Electric Vehicle” titles.
Judged by a panel of 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries, the all-electric SUV stood out among dozens of competitors across all powertrain categories.
A Defining Moment for BMW’s Neue Klasse Era
As the first model built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, the iX3 signals a major shift in the brand’s electrification strategy. The model made its debut at IAA Mobility 2025 and quickly gained attention for its new design language, advanced software architecture, and next-generation EV performance.
This double award win marks the 10th and 11th victories for the BMW Group at the World Car Awards, reinforcing its position in the global EV market.
Performance, Range and Charging Lead the Segment
The BMW iX3 combines efficiency with performance, delivering up to 805 km (WLTP) of driving range, 800-volt architecture for ultra-fast charging, charging speeds of up to 400 kW and energy consumption as low as 15.1 kWh/100 km.
At a DC fast charger, the battery can add up to 372 km of range in just 10 minutes—placing it among the fastest-charging EVs currently available.
The dual-motor setup in the iX3 50 xDrive produces 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h.
Next-Generation Technology and Interior Innovation
A major highlight is the introduction of the BMW Panoramic iDrive system, powered by BMW Operating System X. This next-gen interface integrates:
– Panoramic Vision display spanning the windshield
– 17.9-inch central touchscreen with high-resolution matrix backlight
– Optional 3D Head-Up Display
– Multifunction steering wheel with Shy Tech controls
At the core of the system are four high-performance “superbrain” computers, delivering up to 20 times more processing power than previous BMW architectures. The “Heart of Joy” control unit manages driving dynamics, working alongside BMW Dynamic Performance Control software to enhance precision, efficiency, and ride smoothness.
Recognition Backed by Global Testing
The award-winning status of the BMW iX3 is based on extensive real-world testing by the international jury. The model outperformed 57 contenders to win “World Car of the Year” and topped a field of 43 electric vehicles for the EV category.
The awards were officially presented at the 2026 New York International Auto Show, further cementing the iX3’s global recognition.
Leadership Recognition for BMW CEO
In parallel with the vehicle’s success, Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, was named “World Car Person of the Year” for 2026. His leadership has been credited with steering BMW through a transformative phase focused on electrification, digitalization, and sustainability.
