Chinese EV giant BYD continues its EV dominance, posting its best sales month of 2025 in May! BYD sold 382,476 new-energy vehicles (NEVs), marking a 0.63% increase from April and 15.27% surge compared to last year. Of those, passenger vehicles were 376,930.
This impressive performance underscores BYD’s strategic pivot towards cutting-edge electric vehicles. The company is actively transitioning its lineup, with newer EVs now boasting standard driver-assist systems. Notably, their latest models, the BYD Han L and Tang L, are pushing the boundaries of charging technolog, adding 400 kilometers (around 250 miles) of range in just five minutes thanks to their superfast charging capabilities.
A significant highlight of May’s sales figures is the resurgence of fully electric battery vehicles. For the first time in many months, BYD sold more BEVs (204,369 units) than plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. This represents an impressive 42.5% year-on-year increase and a 4.41% jump from April.
In contrast, PHEV sales reached 172,561 units, showing a slight dip compared to both the previous year (-6.3%) and the previous month (-2.4%). This shift signals a growing consumer appetite for pure electric mobility.
Beyond passenger vehicles, BYD’s commercial NEV sector is also experiencing growth. Commercial NEVs sold 5,546 units in May, up 317.31 percent year-on-year but down 25.80 percent month-on-month.
In May, the company achieved its sixth consecutive record month for overseas NEV sales, reaching 89,047 units, This represents a year-on-year increase of 137.46 percent and a month-on-month increase of 12.60 percent.
BYD ceased production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, switching to a focus on producing plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles.
