BYD Achieves Best Sales Month of the Year, Driven by EV Demand

Chinese EV giant BYD continues its EV dominance, posting its best sales month of 2025 in April! BYD sold 380,089 new-energy vehicles (NEVs), marking a 0.7% increase from March and a whopping 21% surge compared to last year. Of those, passenger vehicles were 372,615.

This impressive performance underscores BYD’s strategic pivot towards cutting-edge electric vehicles. The company is actively transitioning its lineup, with newer EVs now boasting standard driver-assist systems. Notably, their latest models, the BYD Han L and Tang L, are pushing the boundaries of charging technolog, adding 400 kilometers (around 250 miles) of range in just five minutes thanks to their superfast charging capabilities.

A significant highlight of April’s sales figures is the resurgence of fully electric battery vehicles. For the first time in many months, BYD sold more BEVs (195,740 units) than plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. This represents an impressive 45.6% year-on-year increase and a substantial 17.8% jump from March.

In contrast, PHEV sales reached 176,875 units, showing a slight dip compared to both the previous year (-0.4%) and the previous month (-13.85%). This shift signals a growing consumer appetite for pure electric mobility.

Beyond passenger vehicles, BYD’s commercial NEV sector is also experiencing explosive growth. April marked the second consecutive month of record highs, with 7,474 units sold. This represents an astounding 524.39% increase year-on-year and a significant 24.55% rise from March.

In April, the company achieved its fifth consecutive record month for overseas NEV sales, reaching 79,086 units. This remarkable figure represents a 92.84% year-on-year increase and an 8.75% climb from March.

BYD ceased production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, switching to a focus on producing plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles.
