Volvo ES90 electric sedan debuts March 5, will be built with a Nvidia supercomputer

Get ready for the next generation of electric vehicles! We’re just weeks away from unveiling the Volvo ES90, a groundbreaking model that embodies Volvo’s vision for the software-defined car.

According to Volvo, this isn’t just another EV; it’s a vehicle designed to constantly evolve and improve through cutting-edge technology, seamless connectivity, and the power of data. The ES90 promises safer and more enjoyable journeys every single day.

The ES90 marks a significant milestone as the first Volvo car equipped with a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration. This makes it the most powerful car Volvo has ever created in terms of core computing capacity. This immense processing power allows us to elevate safety and performance to new heights, leveraging data, software, and AI.

NVIDIA’s DRIVE AGX Orin is the central nervous system for intelligent cars, orchestrating vital systems and processes at lightning-fast speeds. Boasting approximately 508 trillion operations per second (TOPS), it manages everything from AI-powered active safety features and sensor integration to efficient battery management.

This powerful core computer, driven by DRIVE AGX Orin, represents an eightfold increase in AI compute performance compared to the previous generation. This leap allows to progressively expand the deep learning model and neural network from 40 million to a staggering 200 million parameters. The ultimate goal? Continuously improving the customer experience and, most importantly, enhancing safety.

Built on our SPA2 architecture, the ES90 is the second vehicle to utilize the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack, following the EX90. This approach consists of a unified set of hardware and software modules underpinning all our future electric cars.

The Superset tech stack fundamentally changes how we develop and deploy software, enabling us to enhance safety, technology, and overall performance throughout the car’s lifespan. Improvements are implemented more efficiently and rolled out faster via over-the-air (OTA) updates across all Superset-based models.

These updates can encompass anything from new connectivity features and safety enhancements to performance improvements like increased battery range for specific driving habits. Continuous improvement through regular OTA updates is now a standard feature in every Volvo.

Because the Superset tech stack is the foundation for all upcoming Volvo EVs, performance enhancements for one model, like the EX90, benefit the ES90 and vice versa. Software has become the primary driver of innovation and value for our customers, surpassing hardware.

“The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today, designed to improve over time,” says Anders Bell, our Chief Engineering and Technology Officer. “Built on our state-of-the-art Superset tech stack, the ES90 prioritizes safety.”

The ES90’s advanced sensor suite, including lidar, radar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors, combined with an advanced driver-understanding system, provides an unparalleled understanding of its surroundings. These safety systems are designed to detect obstacles, even in darkness, and proactively activate safety measures like collision avoidance.

“We innovate in all areas of technology to become a leader in software-defined cars, focusing all our engineering efforts on one goal: building great cars that get even better over time,” says Anders Bell. “By combining the power of core computing and our Superset tech stack, we can now create safer cars more efficiently than ever.”

For ES90 customers, this means a premium Volvo designed to prioritize your safety and provide quality time with loved ones. The ES90 is designed to provide the peace of mind and balance we all need in today’s busy world.

The dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration will also be implemented in EX90 vehicles, upgrading the current setup. Existing EX90 customers will receive this upgrade free of charge.

The all-new Volvo ES90 will be revealed to the world on March 5, 2025.
