Renault 5 Turbo 3E reborn as a production model

Anatomy of a Comebac is a documentary series available on Prime Video from 13 December. It tells the story of how Renault Group turned itself around to overcome a crisis on a scale exceeding anything previously seen in this sector.

On the verge of collapse in the early 2020s, the company launched Renaulution, a transformational roadmap that was unique in the automotive industry. A last chance plan. With this documentary, the company is throwing its doors wide open, offering a unique insight into its manufacturing secrets and the design of new models such as Renault 5, as well as taking us into the paddocks of the Alpine Formula One Team.

It also shares the exclusive reveal of a new model. A true human adventure involving difficulty and failure as well as success, viewed through the eyes of the people on the frontline.

In a world first, Renault uses the documentary to reveal a new production vehicle. Right at the end of the fourth episode is an Easter egg. Viewers follow Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group, Fabrice Cambolive, CEO Renault brand, and Gilles Vidal, VP of Renault Design, on a visit to the Design Department to see the future Renault 5 Turbo 3E, confirmed by Luca de Meo as an upcoming production model.

Forty-six years after the launch of the first Renault 5 Turbo, Renault is set to wow enthusiasts with the revival of this ultimate sporting icon. Making the reveal in a documentary is an unusual idea, but one that is well suited to a model that is truly unique. It will be followed in 2025 by an array of exclusive activations further lifting the curtain on Renault 5 Turbo 3E.

The documentary reveals a little more about the future production model. A modern take on Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2, Renault 5 Turbo 3E was revealed by the show car of the same name at the 2022 Paris Motor Show. Packed with performance and exuberance, it makes many nods to the world of motorsports.

With the looks and livery of a car built for the track, it sports the historic colours of one of the rallying versions of the early 1980s. Renault 5 Turbo 3E is an all-electric hot hatch of retro-futuristic design, with an eminently modern charging socket in one of the rear air intakes, bringing to mind the styling of the original ‘Turbo’. The carbon superstructure is both lightweight and extremely stiff, two qualities that are fundamental for a ‘pocket rocket’ worthy of its name and heritage.

Like its iconic predecessor, Renault 5 Turbo 3E will have a rear-wheel drive layout. The two electric motors housed in the rear wheels will deliver instant power to each wheel, for total output of more than 500 bhp. Behind the wheel, drivers will experience ultimate driving thrills with lightning acceleration. Renault 5 Turbo 3E will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, a performance worthy of a supercar or even a hypercar.

The Group is bringing the best of its skills and expertise to the development of this ultimate Renault brand icon.
