Ariel unveils E-Nomad electric off-roader concept

Ariel Motor Company, a UK-based low volume manufacturer of ultra-performance road and track cars, has revealed a near-production E-Nomad concept.

This electric off-roader could join the existing Nomad 2 in production, offering a sustainable alternative to the gasoline-powered model.

Sharing the same design ethos as the traditional Nomad, the E-Nomad swaps the Ford Focus ST engine for a 41kWh battery pack and a rear electric motor. While slightly less powerful than the Nomad 2, the E-Nomad still delivers impressive acceleration with a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds.

Despite being slightly heavier, the E-Nomad boasts a substantial torque output, ensuring it can tackle challenging terrain. Its new aero-optimized bodywork, made from natural plant fibers, helps extend the range to 150 miles on a full charge.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a single-speed transmission, and Ariel claims the E-Nomad offers the same extreme on- and off-road performance as its gasoline-powered sibling.

To meet the demands of off-road driving, the E-Nomad’s battery features an integrated cooling system and a high-voltage heater. Weighing 300kg, the battery is positioned behind the driver and passenger, with a charging time of 20-80% in under 25 minutes.

The battery powers a 92kg drive unit, which includes a combined motor, gearbox, and inverter. The motor spins to 12,000rpm and drives the wheels through a limited-slip differential.

The E-Nomad is equipped with advanced electronics to manage its powertrain and tune its performance based on conditions. Features like regenerative braking, adjustable ABS, and selectable Eco and Sport modes enhance both range and performance.

While the E-Nomad Concept is currently a show car, positive public reaction could lead to its production. If it does, it’s likely to be more expensive than the £67,992 Nomad 2.
