NIO unveils its first smart electric tourer for Europe – ET5 Touring

Chinese smart vehicle manufacturer NIO has announced its first EV tourer for Europe, the ET5 Touring. Designed with families in mind, it adds versatility, space, and practicality to the sporting character of its sedan variant.

ET5 Touring is a pioneer for premium EV tourers in the region, offering users a dynamic EV alternative for today’s active lifestyle. To cater for the demands of modern life, NIO’s design team has extended the pure, sleek roof lines of the ET5 to deliver 450 liters – with a further 42 liters underfloor – of trunk space. ET5 Touring’s progressive aerodynamic (Cd0.25) design evolves the sedan’s muscular haunches and sculpted IllumiBlade taillight with an integrated roof spoiler to blend pure coupe style with touring space.

Rear headroom is increased by 17mm over ET5 sedan with a competitive-in-class 895mm of rear legroom. ET5 Touring offers excellent functionality with 40:20:40 independent folding rear seats. When the rear seats are folded flat, the versatile load area increases significantly to offer 1,300 liters of total space. With an automatic tailgate opening sensor, trunk lip height of just 699mm from the ground, and a fully-flat load space, ET5 Touring makes it easier to pack for a fun and active weekend away.

Quick and thoughtful solutions for secure storage include two magnetic load space straps to hang bags from, along with two convenient storages nets and a pair of hooks in the tailgate – the latter ideal for hanging up wetsuits. Designed for active lives, ET5 Touring features easy-to-clean fabrics inside, a camping mode, and a portable load space flash light which can be removed from its charging point in the trunk.

Other features include the heated wiper bay and panoramic sunroof which brings the outside beauty to the cabin. Now 1.32m long, it offers an intelligent dimming option, as well as protection from up to 99.99 percent of harmful UV rays and 80 percent isolation from heat. Black roof rails are standard, alongside 10 sky-inspired exterior colors, four earth-themed interior hues, and four stylish 19” and 20” wheel designs.

A crucial target for NIO’s global engineering team was to retain the sheer driving pleasure the sporting ET5 offers. ET5 Touring boasts perfect 50:50 weight distribution, while stability is assured through a low center of gravity and a class-leading 2,888mm wheelbase. Rigorous testing in Europe has ensured the smart EV is tuned to deliver a sophisticated blend of sharp handling and composure. The advanced front and rear five-link suspension has been set up to ensure supreme control across a multitude of surfaces. Encompassing NIO’s high-performance DNA, ET5 Touring features NIO’s proven and powerful dual-motor all-wheel drive system, comprising a 150 kW front induction motor and a 210 kW rear permanent magnet motor, with a total power output of 360 kW. ET5 Touring sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds, while high-performance four-piston calipers, deliver a confidence-inspiring braking distance of just 33.9 meters from 100 km/h to 0. NIO’s commitment to safety is assured with a 5-star E-NCAP design and seven airbags as standard.

Central to NIO’s smart EV ethos is the ET5 Touring’s digital cockpit, which runs on the brand’s second-generation technology platform, NT2.0. The car features assisted and intelligent driving with NIO AQUILA Super Sensing, which contains 33 high-performance sensors. When combined with the ultralong range, high resolution LiDAR camera, it gives a supreme sense of the road and its surroundings. All ET5 Touring models are powered by the NIO ADAM Super Computing, which features four NVIDIA DRIVE Orin X chips and 1,016 TOPS of computing power. For users, this means 23 safety and driver assistance features come as standard, with more added regularly via over-the-air (OTA) software (SOTA) and firmware (FOTA) updates. Underlining NIO’s user-centric focus, these include new features, functions or suggestions that NIO users can request either via the car or NIO’s app.

Sophisticated with a human touch, the second living space interior is thoughtful in styling, material, and texture. Technology is cutting edge: a 10.2-inch HDR digital instrument cluster and 12.8-inch AMOLED center console display complement NOMI – NIO’s intelligent AI in-car virtual assistant. Balancing this are warm, cosseting interior materials including Clean+ Composite materials that is luxurious to the touch. Ambience is further enhanced by both the 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos Certified 23-speaker Immersive Sound System, and Smart Fragrance System and Ionizer. The optional 14-way powered, ventilated, and massage, front seats, now with an air cushion as a NIO first on ET5 Touring, provide further luxury touches.

Other options enable users to personalize ET5 Touring to their lifestyle. These include an electrically deployable tow bar, Comfort Package, colored brake calipers and interior finishes.

ET5 Touring is available with a 75kWh battery – capable of up to 435km WLTP range – or a 100kWh battery which offers up to 560km WLTP range. For worry-free power, NIO’s innovative Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) subscription is also available. Like all NIOs, ET5 Touring can access its growing range of Power Swap Stations, offering a fresh battery in less than five minutes as well as access to over 400,000 third party chargers in Europe.
