Daimler has started series production of its B-Class Electric Dar at its plant in Rastatt, Germany.
Sales of the B-Class Electric Drive will start in the US in mid-2014, with Germany and other European countries following later in 2014 and RHD models for the UK arriving in 2015.
We first saw the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive at the New York Auto Show last year. Looking virtually the same as the conventional-powered second-gen B-Class, the Electric Drive is powered by a Tesla-designed 100kW electric motor that produces 177bhp (132 kW) and 250 lb-ft (338 Nm) of torque.
According to the preliminary performance figures, the B-Class ED will do 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 7.9 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 100 mph (161 km/h).
Mercedes says it has an estimated range of 115 miles (200 km). Battery power comes from a 28 kWh lithium-ion battery that is tucked away in rear floor “Energy Space.”
Full technical details to the new car are yet to be revealed.
