Mitsubishi Motors North America has released the first images of the all-new 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV, providing an early look at the brand’s next fully electric model.
Developed in collaboration with Alliance partner Nissan, the new electric SUV is scheduled to arrive in North America as a 2027 model, with its market debut planned for the second half of 2026.
The Eclipse Sportback EV marks a significant step in Mitsubishi’s ongoing electrification strategy and expands the company’s growing portfolio of electrified vehicles.
Based on the Next-Generation Nissan LEAF
The new Eclipse Sportback EV is built on the same foundation as the next-generation Nissan LEAF, but Mitsubishi has emphasized that the vehicle will feature its own distinct styling and brand identity.
While sharing its underlying architecture with Nissan’s latest electric model, the Eclipse Sportback EV receives unique front and rear fascias inspired by Mitsubishi’s global design language. The electric crossover also features exclusive lighting elements, distinctive front and rear light signatures, sport-oriented alloy wheels, and prominent Triple Diamond branding.
The result is a compact electric SUV that blends Mitsubishi’s recognizable styling cues with the advanced EV technology of the latest LEAF platform.
A New Chapter in Mitsubishi’s EV Journey
Although the Eclipse Sportback EV represents a new generation of electric mobility for Mitsubishi, the company’s involvement in EV development stretches back decades.
Mitsubishi began researching battery-electric vehicles in the 1970s and later introduced the i-MiEV, widely recognized as the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle. The model launched in select global markets in 2009 before reaching the United States and Canada in late 2011.
The automaker further strengthened its electrification credentials with the introduction of the Outlander PHEV, which became the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV. The model debuted globally in 2012 and arrived in North America several years later.
Part of the Momentum 2030 Strategy
The Eclipse Sportback EV also plays a central role in Mitsubishi’s Momentum 2030 business plan. The strategy focuses on four major priorities: expanding electrification, introducing a refreshed vehicle lineup, modernizing the retail sales experience, and strengthening relationships with dealers across North America.
As part of this initiative, Mitsubishi has committed to launching at least one new or substantially updated vehicle every year through fiscal 2030.
The Eclipse Sportback EV will not be the only new model arriving in the coming years. Mitsubishi has also confirmed plans for an all-new rugged, off-road-focused derivative of the Outlander SUV, which is expected to debut in early 2027.
